Softening the Light

This is a simple exercise to look at the effect of diffusing, or softening light.

This image was taken using a lamp with nothing covering the bulb. The image shows very strong  and dark shadows with hard edges. There are also small spots in the image were all detail seems to have been lost in the highlights.

SofteningLight-2With this image, a plain piece of paper was placed in front of the lamp. The difference is immediately obvious with the shadows being weaker with less defined outlines. The overall contrast of the image has been reduced.

Judging the images together to say if the diffusion is an improvement or not would depend on the intended outcome. In the diffused image, detail within the objects is easier to see but the shapes of the objects themselves stand out much less.
